Don’t buy alcohol for that day, and don’t go out wiht people or hang out with people who do drink. AA would be a good choice also for supportive reasons and others.

You tell yourself that you can never touch another drop of alcohol and then never drink again. If you cannot do this alone then get help from your doctor. Remember there is no such thing as being on the wagon so there is no WAGON to fall off of. Either you drink or you don’t drink.

I think looking at something like “you can never do X again” is just setting yourself up for failure. That’s why AA is so successful – alcoholics simply cannot ever drink again. But because that’s such a difficult task, going about it in a day-to-day manner seems to have the highest success rate.
It’s not a good habit to have, and if you are an alcoholic, you should look into treatment. You can’t get rid of the disease, you can only arrest it. Good luck.

Alcoholism is a vicious disease. It almost cost my 27 year old son his life 2 years ago because he “couldn’t put it down” (his words not mine). He was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he had seizures so severe the MD told me he probably wouldn’t live. His kidneys shut down, he had hallucinations, more seizures, dangerously high blood pressure and was so completely confused no one could understand what he was saying. He spent 5 days in ICU fighting for his life. He recovered because he was only 27 years old (his doctor’s words, not mine) He joined AA. AA works but you have to work very hard and stay on the program (the 12 steps). There is no cure for alcoholism but AA offers you support from people who have been there. Every person has a sponsor who helps him and is available 24 hours a day. You are also given a list of persons to call for support if your sponsor is unavailable. This is an incredable network. My son relapsed and called the 1st person on the list and within 20 minutes 5 AA members were at his home to help. Join AA. Look in your phone book to find local chapters.

The simple answer is to drink every other day, or how about not all. AA has no better success rates at keeping people abstinent than anything else does.
