I think that its a possibility that alcoholism is genetic and that could be where is starts, but as far as your question I think its all about mental capability and strength. Beating the disease requires the user to be strong mentally, strong enough to work through the hardships. Those that are weaker give up and thus remain as is. My husband and both of my parents are alcoholics, and none of them have gotten clean…they all suck.

my understanding is… if you have a mom or a dad that was drinking when a baby was conceived, then that baby would have that addiction running through it’s veins along with the blood. If the parent is known for drinking during development of the child. Later in life is still expose to it some how then the child grows up and starts to drink… can or has been known to drink huge amounts of it with out affecting that person // verses a non drinker who drinks for the first times gets wasted off of one drink, who isn’t use to the beer or anything else strong. Have you ever heard of drug babies? Same thing. Parents are making babies whom are abusers of what ever they are in taking that is deadly for infants. Or just causes huge problems later in life if they are able to develop with in the womb. Also causes lots of problems for children, learning disabilities and so on, or their brains don’t develop normal. You are what you intake.

I think most people are weak to the temptations to smoke and drink alcoholic beverages. Fortunately, I’m in my low 30′s & I’ve never fell victim to it. Trust me it runs deep in my parents genetic cycle to drink &/or smoke, all my cousins have fallen victim of it plus my sisters. Just not me, I’ve been around it, sort of, all my life… Trust me, it’s not a disease, it’s alot worse than that, it’s a curse & in my family cycle I may have been the key that has broken cycle & I’m proud of it. Did I mention that I’m male, usually the male is very tempted toward those things.
