Question by The Socialist: Would I become an alcoholic if I were to drink alcohol?
My dad is an alcoholic. And both his dad and his dad’s dad were alcoholics. I heard alcoholism runs in families.

P.S. I’m not gonna do anything now; I only 14, but I’d like to know for the future. I’ve heard there are many benefits of moderately drinking alcohol, and I don’t want to miss out on those because I could become an alcoholic. But I definitely don’t want to ruin my life by accidentally becoming an alcoholic.

Best answer:

Answer by Earl the Psychologist
Your more prone to become one since it runs in the family but you should be okay if you keep the drinking for weekends

I’ve looked into effects that are a result of anorexia and bulimia, but what effects result from binging?

Best answer:

Answer by whistler45
I don’t think that there are any negative effects if the woman simply eats too much food and does nothing else. I know lots of women who eat a lot of food in one sitting while pregnant and nothing bad happens…unless the mother has gestational diabetes, but that’s a whole nother story altogether.

We are serving beer, wine, champagne and maybe a signature drink at our reception plus of course tea and punch I hate the word beer on my website so is there any way to put that there will be alcoholic drinks but not a full bar?

I do SOOO well during the week, food doesn’t even interest me.
But come the weekend, i can eat an entire pizza myself.
I gained 4 lbs since yesterday!

HELP?

Best answer:

Answer by em
Get out side and get active!
When you just sit inside your house you get bored and when your bored you seem to eat more, i know i do!
So when you find yourself wandering into the kitchen think about all the stuff you need to get done, and do it instead of eating!

Question by : Does getting completely hammered every weekend make me an alcoholic?
Does going out every weekend (friday and saturday) and getting drunk make me an alcoholic? Most weekends i get just straight shit train wrecked both days in a row. Some days just on friday. Is this an very unhealthy thing to do? Should i be worried about it and stop?
S J M, I’m 19 and live in canada. I’ve been partying like this for about 3 years now.

Best answer:

Answer by Brain Babe
Yes, without a doubt you are well on your way to becoming an alcoholic, if you are not already there. The big thing you need to determine is if you can just go without drinking at all…if you can, say, go for a weekend with no drinking, and you aren’t climbing the walls, that is a good thing.

If, however, you find yourself missing it, craving it, thinking about it constantly, you may have a problem. The best thing you can do for yourself is to give up alcohol for a bit–to see if you can. Also, talk to your doctor….have some kidney and liver function tests run–they are simple blood tests, and will tell you if you have any damage from such heavy alcohol use.

Hopefully, you will be fine, and can begin a more healthy lifestyle that includes other weekend activities besides drinking!

Question by Cindy R.: Does James Frey reject Alcoholics Anonymous?
Does James Frey, the “Million Little Pieces” author reject AA?

Was he forced to go to AA?

Did he like AA?

Best answer:

Answer by raysny
He hated AA and wrote a book about getting sober without AA:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Million_Little_Pieces

Unfortunately for all the people that book resonated with, Fry embellished much of the book, giving AA members something to denounce the book over. Many feel that catching Frey in untruths somehow make their lies true.

People in AA tell the same sort of stories, called drunkalogues, in meetings all the time. Frey was put under a microscope because he doesn’t believe people are powerless over their addictions or that you need AA’s particular god to bail out out on a daily basis.

AA members claim they are the only way a person could possibly get sober. Ignoring all the alcoholics that quit on their own for thousands of years before Bill and Dr. Bob got together for a moment, let’s look at some FACTS:
“One recent study found that 80% of all alcoholics who recover for a year or more do so on their own, some after being unsuccessfully treated. When a group of these self-treated alcoholics was interviewed, 57% said they simply decided that alcohol was bad for them. Twenty-nine percent said health problems, frightening experiences, accidents, or blackouts persuaded them to quit. Others used such phrases as “Things were building up” or “I was sick and tired of it.” Support from a husband or wife was important in sustaining the resolution.”
Treatment of Drug Abuse and Addiction — Part III, The Harvard Mental Health Letter, October 1995.

The Effectiveness of the Twelve-Step Treatment

http://www.orange-papers.org/orange-effectiveness.html

1) Dr. Brandsma found that A.A. increased the rate of binge drinking, and
2) Dr. Ditman found that A.A. increased the rate of rearrests for public drunkenness, and
3) Dr. Walsh found that “free A.A.” made later hospitalization more expensive, and
4) Doctors Orford and Edwards found that having a doctor talk to the patient for just one hour was just as effective as a whole year of A.A.-based treatment.
5) Dr. George E. Vaillant, the A.A. Trustee, found that A.A. treatment was completely ineffective, and raised the death rate in alcoholics. No other way of treating alcoholics produced such a high death rate as did Alcoholics Anonymous.

Can you provide some facts or links so that I know you aren’t just making BSing me?

Best answer:

Answer by volleyballchick (cowards block)
Is there?? Because in my studies for my masters, I never saw that.

Extremists typically are angry, poor, and feel inferior. But they don’t do drugs and/or alcohol (typically). They leave that to the pundits and politicians.
