the purpose of this research paper is to talk a bout a specific treatment model or approach and specify a certain populatio which i chose college students and how does the treatment help them go into a medical approach since this is a chemical dependency course for my major of forensic psychology

College students binge drink for many reasons, which results in long-term health risks. Many college students binge drink in order to fit in with fraternity, sororities members, and/or dormitories that sometimes insists on having young college students to drink especially lots of types of alcoholic drinks. College students drink a variety of alcoholic beverages from light to heavy alcoholic beverages that increase health risks and psychological health risks such as heart diseases and brain abnormalities. Treatments such as motivational interviewing can help lessen the consumption of alcohol and allow the college students who binge drink to slowly recover from this disease they have developed of binge drinking. Means comparisons indicated that both groups showed reductions in alcohol-related problems, however, only the Motivational Interviewing sample evidenced significant reductions in binge drinking (Feldstein, S., & Forcehimes, A., 2007). Misuse of alcohol can lead to a wide range of consequences, the most severe being alcohol abuse, dependence, and death (Devos-Comby, L. & Lange, J., 2008). The median number of drinks in a row that a college man or women must have to be called a binge drinker is 6 for a man and 5 for a woman (Wechsler, H., & Kuo, M. (2000).
Treatments such as motivational interviewing can benefit specifically college students who drink alcohol in sororities or fraternities that, binge drink. Motivational interviewing is a style of counseling that can be used throughout the therapeutic process (Jarvis, Tebbutt, Mattick & Shand, p.45). Since college students struggle with changing their habits and making a decision to change motivational drinking is a good technique in helping them with that problem. Binge drinking is a common problem that many college students are facing throughout their college lives. There are many alcoholic specific treatments that offer a wide range of help to allow those who suffer from binge drinking to be able to recovery from the alcoholic abuse. Yet, motivational interviewing can be used to begin the process of thinking about changing their ways on drinking (Jarvis, Tebbutt, Mattick & Shand, p.45). Motivational interviewing will allow oneself to make his or her own choices in deciding to stop excessive drinking patterns and set a plan to change the alcoholic behavior.
There are a couple of successful ways in which binge drinking can be helped. Findings show that more education and provision of coping skills training during treatment may influence self-efficacy by increasing the coping resources of a patient with SUD (McKellar, Ilgen & Moos, 2008).
The present findings suggest that individuals who report the greatest initial improvements in alcohol-related problems and impulsivity may have difficulty maintaining a high level of self-efficacy (McKellar, Ilgen & Moos, 2008). One brief intervention, motivational interviewing (MI) has shown efficacy in reducing alcohol-related problems in college samples (Feldstein, S., & Forcehimes, A., 2007). When compared with MI, other interventions have also reduced student drinking, necessitating the inclusion of a control condition when evaluating
MI (Feldstein, S., & Forcehimes, A., 2007). While participants reported feeling increased discrepancy from their peers and increased desire to reduce drinking, no behavior change emerged (Feldstein, S., & Forcehimes, A., 2007).

Alcohol students encounter binge drinking due to a form of social entertainment with other college students. Alcohol is the main factor in which students have no control since the process to reduce alcohol consumption is a difficult process. Some types of treatments to consider for alcoholic students are detoxification. Also college students have a hard time in understanding themselves.
There are many factors that contribute to alcohol such as society, pressure, and stress. As a college student, alcohol is a way to release the negativity of life and just use alcohol as a mean to numb the pain one goes through. In order to understand what treatment is best for oneself several steps should be considered to see which treatment is best for one. Consideration of selection and socialization effects is central to understanding how substance use relates to fraternity, and sorority membership (McCabe, Schulenberg, Johnston, O’Malle

In schools with high binge drinking rates, binge drinking doest not only affect the drinker it also affect students who do not drink. “34 percent of non binge drinker reported being insulted or humiliated by binge drinkers; 13 percent reported being pushed, hit, or assaulted; 54 percent reported having to care of a drunken student; 68 percent were interrupted while studying; and 26 percent of women experienced an unwanted sexual advance” (IBID). More than 696,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are assaulted by another students who has being binge drinking (Ellis). When college students drink they don’t only effects themselves they hurt others. Women are the ones who are hurt the most from binge drinking.

If someone you know has an alcohol problem that they have asked for help with continues to abuse it what do you do? At what point do you say enough? I have a female friend who is a binge drinker. Her family is a great friend to alcohol. They have seen alcoholism take a family member and they do not change. I do not drink much maybe 5 – 10 drinks a year. I sometimes feel like I should not even be around them because of how much they drink. When as a friend do you tell yourself to stop the relationship because it drains you?

I’m afraid to be ‘brainwashed’ in rehab.. should I still go?

I’m supposed to go for inpatient treatment for depression and eating disorders and a suicide attempt. I know I need help on the one hand, but I don’t want to go there and be brain washed by counselors and ‘lose myself’ in the process. I’m an atheist and don’t want to change that. I also have a lot of anger in myself and I get angry at ‘overly happy’ people that just rub their exaggerated happiness in your face. I’m afraid I might have trouble to adjust in rehab.
A friend of mine had similar problems and just returned from a 3 month inpatient treatment. She changed almost ALL her beliefs and views, which may be good for her, but I am a little scared at that to be honest. She hated the 12 step program and is now its biggest defender out there. I find that too drastic of a change. It’s good for her to have found the help she needs, but you shouldn’t go from extreme to extreme. Also, I don’t want to come out of rehab judging people or my friends. I always feel people are a tad bit precocious after rehab.

Any input/experiences? I know i need help so please don’t tell me I’m in denial, I just don’t want to have my whole personality changed by what other people believe. Last time I was influenced by other people I ended up becoming a binge drinker and I stopped that behavior by myself, so I do know what’s good for me.

Craving alcohol.. not allowed to drink?

So for the last few days I’ve been craving alcohol like mad. My psychiatrist told me I cannot drink for 6 months because he thinks I am dependent on it (I’m a binge drinker) and also I’m on prozac and clonazepam. Does this make me an alcoholic? I just want a drink so badly.. sadly I’m only 16. I was in drug counselling before for weed and alcohol but I never did stop drinking. The last time I drank was about 3 weeks ago.

serious question about passing drug test…?

i have to take a drug test in about 1 and a 1/2 weeks for a very nice job that i definitly want…i am a weed smoker…i do not touch anything else…but unfortunatly weed can stay in the system for over a month…i need something that will work 4 sure, there is no second guessing here…its either pass and get the great job or fail and not get it…so please tell me what works and is undetectable…

ps: please if your going to make comments about how its illegal and how its bad for you and how i shouldnt do it…

1st its non of your business if you dont have a answer to my question

2nd…weed is less harmful than alcohol

3rd its only illegal cause its hard to regulate and tax and for dui situations

4th i smoke a few times a week…i dont live my life with a bowl hanging out of my mouth…and even if i did, id still be better off than the weekend binge drinker

my baby is 3 months old and lately he has been drinking like a binge drinker. like he drinks an a 8oz bottle in like 10mins its crazy. is he or could be ready to drink cereal? like after that much milk he still wants another whole bottle of milk. he was 6lbs 14oz ang growing… what ya’ll think? no dumb answers plz

Drink problem……..I think.?

Although i never drink at home, or during the week, i really hit it at weekends, sometimes from 1.00pm up untill 9.00pm solid,
mainly lager, never touch spirits, am i considered a binge drinker, i’m getting quite worried about it now, because i cant always remember what happened the next day, sometimes i polish off twenty pints in one session, then back for more on sunday.

the answer to one of the post’s ” can i go without” is yes, upto a certain part of the day, for instance: saturday if i haven’t gone out by say 2.00pm, then i probably would’nt bother going out at all, because largely i am a social drinker, and like to be around people with the same interests as me, normally football, and as a consequence the time flies, and so does my money, i work in a cash orientated job, so i’ve always got money (not intended to sound big headed) it’s just the way it is.

it seems to me that any and everytime i see a question on or about weed…everyone jumps on this high horse and has something (dramatic in their own minds) to say…to claim how useless and dumb drugs are.

i would casually like to remind people….the world that you live in, the programs that you watch, the music that you listen to, the clothes that you wear, even the furniture in the room your sitting in right now….they are created or designed or influenced or thought up by people who use drugs on a regular basis…

you would like to sit on the sidelines and rush to say how stupid a stoner is, or how bad these drugs are, yet you thuroughly like to enjoy your music and watch your tv….are you totally unaware that everything is influenced by these substances that you love to knock on…

a lot of the negativity is even from the weekend binge drinker types…who aside from legallity need to under stand there is no difference between them and any kind of user…

thats all!
